Cyberspace is no place for small companies to be left defenceless

Nik Whitfield runs a cybersecurity business, so he is well equipped to spot criminals trying to hack into his systems. Even so, he was surprised by the sophistication of a recent attempt.

Mr Whitfield received an email purportedly from his father, who has shares in his company, Panaseer. He was asking about the value of the shares because he was thinking of cashing them in to buy a property.

Mr Whitfield says: “As I was about to respond, something didn’t feel quite right. So the first thing I did was text my dad and asked if he had sent me an email like this.”

His father hadn’t. It transpired that his email account had been hacked six weeks previously. The hackers had sent the email…
